Rat Facts

  • Rodents are the most populated mammal on earth
  • There are an estimated 4 million rats born everyday, ten for every human born.
  • A Norway rat reaches sexual maturity in two months
  • Given a 100% survival rate, pyramid breeding from a pair of rats can result in excess of 3,500 off-spring in one year
  • Rats are known to carry 70 diseases including cholera, typhus, bubonic plague and leptospirosis, a bacterial illness spread by urine contaminating water and food
  • A hundred rats will eat about 350kg of grain per year
  • The United States has an estimated 1.25 billion rats, causing at least US$19 billion dollars worth of damage each year
